BANKING77 · 77-case paired pilot · 18 September 2026

Jev is very cheap.
Cheap is not the hard part.

Nine AI models classified exactly the same banking-support requests. Jev cost almost nothing, but the stronger models also cost pennies—and made materially fewer mistakes. For most businesses, the cost of a wrong decision matters more than the cost of the model call.

Highest observed accuracy{pct(float(astra["accuracy"]))}GPT-6 Astra · 68 of 77 correct

Near the top, much cheaper{pct(float(gemini["accuracy"]))}Gemini 3.8 Flash · {gemini_discount:.0%} cheaper than Astra here

Jev{pct(float(jev["accuracy"]))}{money(float(jev["cost_per_1000"]))} per 1,000 classifications

The practical comparison is Jev vs Luna. On this prompt, Jev saved only {money(jev_saving_vs_luna)} per 1,000 requests versus GPT-5.6 Luna, while making about {extra_errors_jev_vs_luna:.1f} more errors per 100 requests. At ordinary business volumes, that is a poor trade unless mistakes are almost free.

What happened?

We selected one request from each of BANKING77's 77 support categories. Every model saw the same request and the same 77 allowed labels. There was no LLM judge: a prediction counted only when it exactly matched the dataset's gold routing label.

{bars}

Do not over-read the top two. Astra got 68 cases right; Gemini got 67. They disagreed in only five decisive cases, and this 77-case pilot cannot establish that one is generally better. It can establish that both were substantially stronger than Jev in this sample.

Model price is rarely the business bottleneck

The chart puts quality and inference cost on the same page. Cost uses a log scale because the models span more than two orders of magnitude. Click any model for its details.

{scatter}

Up and left is better: more accurate and cheaper. The vertical axis is intentionally clipped to the observed 72–91% range; it does not start at zero.Swipe the chart horizontally →

The table below translates the same experiment into operational units. “Errors per 100” is simply what this small pilot observed; it is not a production SLA.

Model

Accuracy

Errors / 100

Cost / 1,000

Median latency

{business_rows}

Costs are the OpenRouter
usage.cost
reported for the 77 successful calls, extrapolated to 1,000 requests. They include each model's actual token usage in this run, including reasoning tokens where reported. Initial development retries are excluded.

Business implication: even the most expensive model here cost less than one cent per classification. If a wrong route causes a human hand-off, customer delay, rework, fraud exposure, or compliance risk worth more than a few cents, optimize decision quality first. Optimize token price second.

Confidence is not a guarantee

A useful confidence score should behave like a probability: decisions called “90% confident” should be right about 90% of the time. Jev was {pct(float(jev["mean_confidence"]))} confident on average but only {pct(float(jev["accuracy"]))} correct. Luna showed a similar gap. Opus and Fable looked better calibrated in aggregate, but 77 cases is too small to certify production thresholds.

Jev's confidence was still useful for ranking risk: its AUROC was {float(jev["auroc"]):.3f}. That means the score contains signal about which cases are dangerous—even though the number itself is too optimistic.

Business implication: never turn “confidence ≥ 95%” directly into “no human review.” Learn that threshold from historical cases with known answers, freeze it, and validate it on untouched cases.

What should a company do with Jev?

Use it as a specialist, not as a frontier-model replacement. Jev is attractive when you need huge volumes of bounded, typed decisions, latency matters, and mistakes are cheap or easily caught downstream. Its median response here was {float(jev["median_latency_s"]):.2f}s.

For higher-stakes classification, this pilot points instead toward a strong general model—especially Gemini 3.8 Flash or Astra—because the absolute inference cost is still tiny. A sensible architecture may be a cheap first pass plus escalation, but the escalation rule should be learned from a larger held-out benchmark, not invented from this pilot.

Also note the dataset itself is imperfect for this prompt-only setup: {all_miss} of 77 requests were missed by all nine models. Several depend on fine distinctions that are clearer with a routing guide than with label names alone. Production evaluation should include the real policy or taxonomy definitions users expect the model to follow.

<details>
Methodology and reproducibility

One deterministic frozen case per BANKING77 class, 77 total. Chat models return one label plus a 0–100 probability of being exactly correct. Jev uses OpenRouter's Decisions endpoint and returns a full choice distribution; its top-choice probability is the comparable confidence score. Reasoning was disabled for Luna, Sol and DeepSeek; low reasoning was requested for Astra, Opus, Fable, Gemini and Sonnet.

The runner is resumable: an existing
(model, case)
result is skipped. Re-running
uv run run.py --dry-run
should report zero pending calls.
